Heidi EY Stemple's School Visits

Did you know that even if you've never read one of my books,
you may still know me.
I'm the little girl in OWL MOON.
And, I've been around books and book-making my entire life.
I grew up in a 20 room house -- with bookcases in every room...
even the bathrooms!

My school program is called
"My Life In Books".
(See a preview of my introduction)
I begin by introducing not only myself,
but my entire family,
all of whom are involved in the book business.
I share poetry
and take students through the creative process--
step by step.

Students (and teachers) always enjoy the comparison between professional writing and school writing.
"Do you ever get back a paper from your teacher and there are red marks all over it?
Your teacher tells you,
'You have to have a capital letter at the beginning of
every sentence and a period at the end.
There, their and they're are three different words and you need to spell each of them right!'
Well, I almost never forget my capitals and my periods,
and I know all the theres,
but I have an editor who sends my papers back with LOTS of red marks!"

THE PROGRAM:
Length: Approximately 30-35 minutes for K-2nd grade
45-60 minutes for older grades
Programs per day: Generally, two before lunch and two after is the maximum because anything after that, I tend to lose my voice, and more importantly, forget what I'm saying. I'm happy to take a break for dinner and give an evening reading or program.
Number of Students: Of course, the smaller the group, the better. But the number of classes or students is up to the school.
Q/A: No matter the age or length of the program, the most important part is the Question/Answer time at the end. Please be assured that I've been asked everything and will answer anything.

THE VENUE:
Equipment: I use a Mac iBook Powerbook for a PowerPoint presentation as the backdrop to my talk. I bring my own computer and projector, but need a large white screen or wall to project onto. I need two tables and water. I am pretty loud but in a gym, I generally need a microphone. This is up to the discretion of the school/library.
Location: It is easier to place me in one location and bring the students to me.
Taping: I do not mind being taped, but the tape is to be used only by the school or library, not to be sold, nor viewed elsewhere.
Classes not included: I understand that some classes usually get left out when an author visits. I have no problem arranging extra time to read poetry (funny stuff) for classes that are not coming to the programs.

THE STUFF I DON'T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT:
My Fee: I charge $750 per day for school/library visits (due the day of the presentation) plus all expenses which includes travel, food and lodging. Within a reasonable distance, arrangements for driving may be appropriate and mileage will be charged. Airfare must be arranged and paid for by the organization doing the hiring. When a visit is local, meaning I can make my children's car pool, a lower fee can be discussed.
Accommodations: I do not need anything fancy, but I do need time to unwind alone. When feeding me, in order to avoid any embarrassment (mostly on my part), I don't eat ham, bacon or any fish--thanks! My favorite meal is a salad with grilled or fried chicken and ranch dressing, in case anyone is wondering. I do not mind eating in the cafeteria or with a small group of hand picked students.

PREPARING FOR MY VISIT:
Preparing Students: The difference between a good program and a fabulous, memorable and fun program is the mood of the students. I will fully introduce myself to the students, but if they are introduced to my books before I get there, they will be more engaged and therefore learn more from me. Reading one or more of the UNSOLVD MYSTERIES FROM HISTORY to the students who will be attending my program will make all the difference in the world.
Selling/Autographing: Of course, I would like to sell a couple of my books while I visit. It is wonderful when the students have an opportunity to pre-order a book to have autographed while I'm there. My website has an introduction to each book (as well as the publishing information and ISBNs). I do not sell books but will be happy to furnish you with several excellent booksellers who are familiar with my work and can help you with this. If books are pre-ordered to be signed by me, please use a clear and simple form (I can fax you an effective one prior to my visit) for each book so I can personally autograph them.
Please note: MIRROR MIRROR is an adult book of folk and fairy tales--not for grade school children without parental supervision.

Look How tall I am at S.B. Butler Elementary School!

What Teachers and students have said about my program:

"Heidi Stemple did an outstanding job motivating and relating to our middle school students. In efforts to promote literacy, having a well-known author visit our school emphasizes to our students the importance of reading and writing."
--Ronald Garner, Principal Cowpens Middle School

"People usually think that famous people are stuck up, but she didn't act like she was. She was joking around with us."
--Jessica, 7th grade

"You would think that an author would not want to have so many kids around her, but she liked the company of young people."
--Lyndon, 7th grade

"She answered all of our questions and didn't make us feel like they were weird."
--Leah, 6th grade
